3 dead in Zambo bus blast
MANILA, Philippines—Another Army junior officer was killed as clashes between government troops and members of Moro National Liberation Front reached its 16th day on Tuesday in Zamboanga City.
First Lieutenant Francis Damian sustained fatal gunshot wounds on Monday during a gunbattle with the Moro rebels in Brgy. Sta. Barbara. He died on Tuesday morning at Ciudad Zamboanga Hospital, Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang said.
A graduate of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 2007, the 28-year-old Damian was assigned with the Army’s 3rd Light Reaction Company of the Special Operations Command.
Damian, who hailed from Quezon City, was married. He was the third officer to die from the Zamboanga fighting. All of them were junior officers.
SOMEWHERE IN NORTH COTABATO—Armed members of the Ilaga, a Christian group known for its bloody attacks and human rights abuses in Mindanao in the 1970s, have resurfaced in this province, warning the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to stop its atrocities against civilians or face the consequences.<click here for link>
“If the fighting will continue, for every civilian killed, we will execute 10 Moro rebels,” Mike Santiago, spokesperson of the Reform Ilaga Movement, told reporters during a press conference yesterday.
Santiago said the Ilaga (Visayan term for “rat”) would defend not only the rights of Christians and lumad (indigenous peoples), but also of Muslims displaced by the attacks of MILF rebels in Central Mindanao.
“The civilians are suffering now. That’s why we are asking the leadership of the MILF to stop its harassment and attacks in Mindanao because it will only complicate the life of the people,” he said.
