What are the best careers in IT?

  • Working as a Wintel Sys Ad in a bank na nagoffshore from Australia. I think it applies to all fields of IT. Need mo talaga ng specialization.
  • Ang maganda kasi sa Mainframe medyo maliit ang kumpetensiya, konti lang kasi nagtuturo nito schools, some companies provide intensive training like sa BPI, as said by sandmanclever. Pero alam ko AMA ata nagtuturo ng COBOL, but not sure.

Kapag lumipat ka ng kumpanya, you\'ll be surprised that some of your colleagues in COBOL are there.

Take note: Once you know Mainframe COBOL, it doesn\'t mean you know it all. You still have to learn the other programing utilities like: JCL, CICS, DB2, IMS, IBM Utilities, MQ, and all sort of stuffs, specially when your Mainframe is communicating with Web interfaces, like Java, PEGA, and the likes... But you\'ll learn it along the way. All big companies (specially banking) have teh Mainframe as their work horse. Some rent their Mainframes sa IBM and some have their own Mainframe machines.

Just start small, finish the bond and watch how your net pay grows. :) Like what I did, I was a fresh ECE grad and hired by Accenture to do Mainframe COBOL for 15k/month, then I moved to other companies, and the net pay grew really really good, and the best of it, I\'m still here in the Philippines, no need to go abroad.
  • Ang alam ko SAP is a programming language like PHP I think.

  • @armitage

First you disagreed, then you proved my point hehe

    RE: Support

Scouring the net, mailing lists, and chat rooms are not support, they\'re advices. These advices wouldn\'t be accountable for anything. If you follow their advice to fix something, but it turns out to be a disaster, it\'s your ass on the line not theirs. Yun ang mahirap.

Further, if you need paid support (where a consultant comes to you or theres a help line you can call) these are available as well. Research on this matter would have prevented the posting of such nonsense.

I know this sir. Red Hat for example, provides paid support. The point is, their support is not as extensive as MS products.
Then again, Red Hat is just one. Pano yung ibang Open Source systems? If you can say na at least half of the Open Source systems out there have paid support, then I rest my case.

    RE: Kuripot

I didn\'t say all, I said usually. Gaya ng sabi mo:
However, should you localize the scope of the matter, then yes, quite a few companies run on shoestring budgets where pay is low.
  • Ang alam ko SAP is a programming language

Hmm, hindi po. Software Solution po sya. Parang CRM, ERP, etc.

  • pano ba mainframe programming? how is it different from application programming?
  • Well.... It is basically the same, application programming is more of a general term, mainframe programming is just specific as to what platform you are working on. I think. Let me know if I\'m amiss. Thanks.
  • I totally disagree na low pay open source. It really depends on your portfolio on how high you can get. I\'m an open source dev/admin. Here\'s a hint.

    1. The internet is composed almost 80% of open source. Linux/mySQL/Apache and Perl (and other alikes).
    2. Open source doesnt mean it\'s cheap, there are varying licenses in the open source community (GNU/GPL/etc...)

PHP/Perl dev\'s have higher salary over .net here in the Philippines (see the corporate ones).

    TRUE STORY

So far, programming career talaga ang major major sa IT field in my opinion. kahit saan kasi naghahanap sila ng gagawang system, ganito, ganyan. tama si qyut na
when you enjoy something, you grow from it.

basta wag mo gawing burden ang work.

try Java, PHP/MySQL, C/C++, Oracle, DB2. :D
  • ^Sama mo na Mainframe COBOL, it will never be beaten in terms of processing humongous amounts of data. :)
  • ^ Sir kung mababasa mo yung post ko sa kabilang page, I am pertaining to Systems Administration. Guys don\'t get me wrong, I\'m an Open Source advocate too :)

It really depends on your portfolio on how high you can get.

This is true not just in Open source systems.
